Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026

Gist ("the app") is designed to work entirely on your device. This policy explains what that means in plain terms.

What we collect

Gist stores the name, username, email (if you choose to enter one), learning preferences, and progress in your browser's local storage. We use Vercel's privacy-focused analytics and speed measurement to understand aggregate app performance. We do not sell personal data or use advertising trackers.

What's stored, and where

Your learning preferences, streak, XP, and completed lessons are saved using your browser or device's local storage. Community participation and notifications are optional: when enabled, the displayed community profile or push subscription is stored on our server to provide that feature. Clearing browser data removes the on-device copy; leaving Community removes its server profile.

Book cover images

Cover art is loaded from Open Library (openlibrary.org), a public, non-commercial catalog project. Loading a cover image sends a standard network request to their servers, the same as loading any image on the web; we do not control or receive that request data.

Audio narration

The "Listen" feature uses your device's built-in text-to-speech engine. Lesson text is processed by your operating system to generate speech; no audio or text is sent to us.

Changes to this policy

Secure cross-device accounts will use verified sign-in before any cloud restore is enabled. This page and the version notes will be updated before that change launches.
